Light In The Attic’s 10 Year Anniversary | Seattle & Los Angeles Concerts | Limited Edition 7″ Series

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Hard to believe ten years have passed since Matt Sullivan and Josh Wright founded Light In The Attic, a label responsible for some of the sharpest looking and sounding reissues and new albums of recent years. To celebrate the tenth anniversary, Light In The Attic has put together some very special events and a series of exclusive singles.

In the ten years since its inception, Light In The Attic has launched The Black Angels to the world and released rare treasures from funk-rock maverick Betty Davis, proto-punk band The Monks, folk singers Karen Dalton, Jim Sullivan, and Michael Chapman, larger-than-life troubadours Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, Korean rock hero Shin Joong Hyun, and Memphis soul heavyweights Wendy Rene and Charles “Packy” Axton.

Over the years, we also delved deep in to the history of our home town with vintage Seattle soul via the series Wheedle’s Groove, reissued classics from country stalwarts Kris Kristofferson and the Louvin Brothers, brought rock-n-roll farmers Donnie & Joe Emerson to the public, expanded minds with the deeply vibrant Jamaica to Toronto series, and played a key role in the rediscovery of legendary singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, recently celebrated in the Sony Pictures Classics critical smash film, Searching For Sugar Man. The list is long.

It’s only right, then, that we’re not letting an anniversary like this pass unmarked. Headlining two celebratory concerts is Rodriguez, a man for whom rediscovery via Light In The Attic has taken him from obscurity to long-deserved fame. Line-ups for the two shows – to be held in Los Angeles and Seattle – will include the third ever U.S. performance by South Korea’s 75-year old ‘Godfather of Rock’ Shin Joong Hyun, veteran Yorkshire finger-picking wizard Michael Chapman, and a very rare performance from rediscovered darlings of private press, Donnie & Joe Emerson.

In addition to the shows, we will be releasing a series of very special singles as colored vinyl 7”s and digital downloads. The series features contemporary artists covering a track reissued by Light In The Attic on the A-side, plus the original version on the B-side. The series begins with Iggy Pop & Zig Zags covering Betty Davis, and the standard remains equally high.

Sullivan conceived Light In The Attic having worked as an intern for Seattle’s Sub Pop and Loosegroove labels in the ‘90s. Spending a summer in Spain working for reissue label Munster Records, he hit on the idea of launching his own. In the decade in which the world went digital, Light In The Attic bucked the trend, focusing on creating beautiful, covetable, desirable discs. “That’s what gets us up in the morning – finding records, finding new ways to shed light on them and get them the respect they deserve,” says Matt. “The packaging, the album, it all has to be one inspiring experience.”

Listen, Whitey! author/compiler Pat Thomas on KEXP’s “Roadhouse”

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Tune in this Wednesday February 22nd (6:30pm – 7:45pm) to Greg Vandy’s excellent show on KEXP–The Roadhouse.

Pat Thomas will be talking about his upcoming book, Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975 (published by Fantagraphics) and our companion ‘soundtrack’ Listen, Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power 1967-1974 (LITA 081) both out Tuesday February 28th.

RODRIGUEZ JUMPS TO #34 ON KEXP CHARTS!

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

There are certain things in Sea-town you just don’t fuck with: Sub Pop, The Space Needle, Dicks Hamburgers, Nancy Guppy, Tilson’s scarves, the fine proprietors of the Motel Italia – the list goes on and on.  But, as the nation as slowly learned over the course of the last five years, one of our great local treasures is independent radio behemoth, KEXP.  They’ve spread their considerable wings this year, joining up with a New York radio conglomerate to continue to their bombardment of the best music on the airwaves.

And what can we say, they certainly seem to enjoy Light In The Attic, as the amazing new reissue by Rodriguez, Cold Fact, has jumped to number 34 on their national charts.  Maybe 34 doesn’t seem that high to you negative nancies, and glass-half-full types, but look who’s ruling the roost above us: David Letterman-appearing Fleet Foxes, The Moondoggies, Danger Mouse-assisted Beck – seriously, look at that list!  We couldn’t be happier that our recently rediscovered hero of late-60s-folk-psych-rock Rodriguez edged his way in to the top 50.

KEXP, we salute you.

THE BLACK ANGELS PREMIERING ON KEXP’S JOHN IN THE MORNING!

Monday, April 7th, 2008

You read that right, our Black Angels, our wonderfully dour Black Angels, are getting a pretty substantial premiere from our good friend John over at the greatest radio station on Earth, KEXP. For the next week John, wonderful John, is going to premiere not one, but two songs from the new Black Angels’ album Directions To See A Ghost each morning on his, well, brilliant radio show.

And if that wasn’t awesome enough, next week John will premiere the four tracks off the promotional EP that those smart enough to purchase the album from an independent record store on April 15th will receive. And of course you can learn all about the digital promotion right HERE.

Here’s the thing, you should be listening to John in the Morning anyways, he’s one of the great tastemakers in America right now, but for the next couple weeks you have an even greater incentive.

Thank you KEXP, as always, for your unending support of great music.

VOTE FOR NICOLE/THE BLAKES/TSK AT KEXP.COM

Monday, December 17th, 2007

It’s that time of the year again. A time of presents and cocoa, dreidels and fake chocolate money, embarrassingly drunk X-Mas parties and spiked egg nog at Grammies. Yup, it’s the end of the year holiday season and all the grand accoutrements that come with it are roaring in to effect.

And you know what that means: TOP TEN LISTS … … or top five, or top three, or top one million … you get the jist.

Well, we at Light In The Attic are eager as wood-starved beavers to get our well-deserved bands on these lists so we’re begging and pleading that you, our loyal fans will do a little voting for us. Think of it as your X-Mas present to us. And you’ll be getting your present … in … the, er, mail. Yeah, that’s the ticket …

Lets start off with our favorite radio station in the whole world, KEXP! They’re doing a fan-based best of 90.3 and we’d love for you to help us get The Blakes, The Saturday Knights and Nicole Willis at the top of that list. Just head on over to KEXP and type in your favorite Light In The Attic-related music. Then just sit next to the chimney and wait for that holiday cheer to start rolling on in.

AROUND THE ATTIC: KEXP’S JOHNNY HORN

Monday, November 5th, 2007

This is a really special edition of Around the Attic, for us and hopefully very much so for you. We’ve been harassing a variety of people over the last few weeks trying to get them to compose, well, something for our Around the Attic. As always we baited our shiny little hook with paper Monopoly money and the ever-present promise of fame and it looks like we landed ourselves a whopper.

You may know Johnny Horn from his absolutely fantastic KEXP show Preachin’ The Blues that airs every Sunday morning from 9:00 to noon. You could know him from his Thursday night dance party (WICKED and WILD Dancehall Thursdays) at The War Room. Or maybe you know him from work he’s done for little old us as a producer, engineer and straight up musician.

No matter how you know him, you’re about to know him a little better. Introducing, the likes, the loves, and the creeping underwater fears of Johnny Horn.

I am infatuated/enthralled/scared to death of the deep sea. I cannot be alone in a swimming pool without thinking of the sharkpool fight scene from Thunderball, and even wading in a murky ocean is only tolerable briefly. Too bad because I hear waterboarding is all the rage. Nonetheless I watched Shark Week like a madman last time it ran on cable and have collected many photos of scary and messed up sea animals. I get a creepy feeling like something’s behind me when I look at them. Sharks and rays are beautiful and perfect while being ugly and terrifying. What really makes my mind race are the freshwater coral, sharks, rays and other sea species that inhabit the Amazon’s murky depths, but that is a whole different tangent…

Deep Throat & Betty on KEXPlicit!

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

KEXP (you know, the greatest radio station in the nation) has always done right by us. They play our bands music, they talk us up on the air, and they seemingly love our delicious reissues.

Point in case: the most recent KEXP Podcast, deemed KEXPlicit because of it’s thematic leanings towards dirty-sexy songs and the fact that it’s the 69th edition of Music That Matters, features two tracks from our renowned reissues. The whole damn podcast kicks off with “She’s Got To Have It” from the Deep Throat Soundtrack Vol. 1. And seven tracks later the lovely Betty Davis pipes up with “He Was A Big Freak”.  Suh-suh-sexy!

It’s a pretty great little podcast, featuring a bunch of FCC-irking tracks by artists like Minor Threat, Spank Rock, and the Coconut Coolouts.

Download this dirty, perverted son-of-a-bitch right here.

The Blakes CMJ Pictures!

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

We wish we could’ve flown each and every single one of your, our FAN-tastic fans all out the Big ‘ole Rotten Apple for the two nights of CMJ. We wish we could piled you up on a big old jet airliner and sent you out in support of your, and ours, favorite boozy rock-trio, The Blakes, as they jammed out two shows for public consumption. God, how we wish you could’ve heard the boys tweak their songs in to gentle acoustic slices of beauty on Friday at Planetary, only to come back in a fog of distorted gee-tar for round two at The Cake Shop on Saturday. We wish, we wish, we wish – but we’re a fledgling record company with only enough money for our fantastic bands, so stop being so fucking greedy.

Instead just look at these great pictures from the various shows!
