It’s A Blue Hill Day – A Tribute To Christopher Dedrick

Monday, November 5th, 2012

Sandy Dedrick, lead singer of The Free Design has produced and recorded a solo album entitled It’s a Blue Hill Day: A Tribute to Christopher Dedrick. The Free Design was made up of brothers and sisters of the Dedrick family who grew up in the beautiful countryside of western New York State. Many of the light and breezy songs Free Design fans love to this day (“Kites are Fun”, “Love You”, “I Found Love”) were inspired by their surroundings, their family, friends and experiences on the hill they affectionately dubbed “Blue Hill.”

Sadly, Christopher Dedrick passed away in August 2010 and, wanting to honor him, Sandy chose and recorded 14 of his mostly unrecorded songs, and released 10 of them in 2012.

In the tradition of The Free Design, It’s a Blue Hill Day is filled with beautiful songs and arrangements written by Chris between 1975 and 2010 and backing Sandy’s voice is a band of musicians acknowledged as some of the best jazz and classical players of today. Fans of The Free Design should definitely check this out. It’s a Blue Hill Day is available now, grab a copy from CDbaby.com

Also, be sure to catch The Free Design on the cover of September’s Shindig! You can snag a copy from Shindig-Magazine.com

We’ll leave you with The Free Design doing “My Brother Woody,” a song Chris wrote about their youngest brother, Jason.

We miss you, Christopher.

Set your YouTube eyes on Holiday Time (Volume 1)!

Monday, December 20th, 2010

It’s that time of year…you get your presents, buy your over-priced plane tickets, and you bide your time at work by trawling YouTube videos all week! Well, this year, we thought we’d make your search a lil’ easier. Think of us as your little Elves. This is a small selection of some of our favorite Holiday videos. Some are old, some are new, and some are both old and new at the same time. Huh?

Happy Holidays — Light In The Attic

Now, let’s set the tone with the “Cha Cha Heels for Christmas” scene from John Waters’ Female Trouble. A touching portrait of the Christmas ritual gift exchange.

And now, let’s get a little more serious (well, just a little). This gem is The Free Design’s “Close Your Mouth (It’s Christmas)”, which we included as a bonus track on our reissue of You Could Be Born Again.

Finally, let’s get real serious. Why, cuz this track is seriously good! It’s The Mighty Pope & The Sadies doing “White Christmas” on the CBC TV show The Hour. I know it’s from last year, but The Mighty Pope rocks! He is featured on our comp Jamaica To Toronto: Soul, Funk & Reggae 1967 – 1974. And according to LITA’s numero uno Matt Sullivan, “He’s truly the sweetest, coolest dood on the planet.” Awe!

And to close out the evening, we leave you with a very, very funky Christmas. That’s James Brown’s Funky Christmas and the track is “Santa Claus, Go Straight To The Ghetto”. Take it away, Mr. Brown!

And tune in again later this week for, Volume 2. Expect weirdo Christmas, punk Xmas, and some Bob Dylan Holiday video to scramble your mind!

AH THE SWEET SWEET WEED(S)!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Whoa.  It’s nearing the end of the work week and we just wanted to thank Showtime and the good people behind Weeds for ending their season four finale with The Free Design’s “Love You”.  If you’re feeling nostalgic for the show, hop on over to I-Tunes and you can snag a digital copy of the single, right here.

And as long as were thanking people, let us thank what ever diety was responsible for bringing us Mary-Louise Parker and all of her considerable, er, acting abilities.  Thank you thank you thank you.

LIKE WEEDS? LIKE THE FREE DESIGN? TUNE IN ON MONDAY NIGHT THEN…

Friday, September 12th, 2008

So, you’re a huge fan of Showtime’s weed-dealing-in-suburbia half-hour Weeds.  You’ve tuned in each week for the last, almost, four years and you’ve already organized your friend Bob to play Quentin and your sister Hazel Elizabeth to play that bit-part cameo Zooey Deschanal had at the end of season two for your season-ending Weeds Finale party this Monday.  That’s great, we here at Light In The Attic abso-fucking-lutely applaud you.

So, when you’re not watching Showtime’s weed-dealing-in-suburbia half-hour Weeds, you can usually be found in your newly named FreeDesign-onia crib, blasting the 20 song mega-mix of Free Design tracks you spent all last weekend cobbling together.  You’re a Free Design free-k and proud of it.

Then this Monday, you loyal fan you, is going to be a big day for you, as the fourth season of Weeds comes to an end, and what song will blast across the supposedly uber-intense credits?  The Free Design’s “Love You” of course, a supposedly fitting tribute to what occurs in these final moments. You, and the rest of the Weeds-lovin’ world should be very excited.

FREIA AND FREE DESIGN TOGETHER AT LAST …

Monday, June 9th, 2008

There are many questions that arise after watching this video for a product called Freia:

1. What is Freia? A candied tube of butter? Swiss Rolos? Bully-deterrent?

2. What is that lovely song playing in the background?

Oh my, we know the answer to this one! It’s The Free Design’s amazing song “Love You” and oh how it celebrates the love of this, er, candied Duralog.

Seriously, it’s a beautiful song, and a beautiful little commercial and we thought we’d share it with you.

THE FREE DESIGN ON STONE’S THROW BADD SANTA COMP

Friday, December 21st, 2007

It’s the X-Mas season, and what better way to celebrate a holiday dedicated to the birth of a 2000 year old dead man and massive consumerism, than a compilation of obscure Christmas tunes from our friends over at Stone’s Throw? Yeah, we can’t think of a better way either.

Peanut Butter Wolf, leader of the whole Stones Throw conglomerate has cobbled together some rare and unheard pieces of Christmas cheer from some honest to goodness greats. You know James Brown, Baron Zen … THE FREE DESIGN. Yup, our 60s-psych rocking friends The Free Design appear on the Badd Santa compilation with a little X-Mas diddy entitled, “Close Your Mouth (It’s Christmas)”. It’s a little bit funky, a little bit fresh, and a little bit bizarro. Just the tune to get Santa, Mrs. Clause and all their assorted horned pets shakin’ that ass during this X-Mas Season.

The comp also features Super Jay, Scoopy, Baron Zen and a quite few more getting their holiday jam on.

Light In The Attic Takes Television

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

There are many varied arms of the unwieldy beast that is the music industry – bands, ringtones, albums, touring, publicity, internet content, the hellish world that is Myspace, and of course, the idiot box itself: television. Our TV/Film Guru Sandy works his purdy lil’ ass off morning and night getting the great music this label puts out in to television shows, movies, and just about anything else defined as screen media. We’re taking the boobtube by storm in the coming weeks and we want you to know about it, so get out the old TIVO remote, and take this shit down!

From Sandy, good old Sandy, who’s even been nice enough to link to a few of the places where you can check these out for free:

We’re happy to announce a couple placements:

- Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators “If This Ain’t Love” aired on
a recent episode of ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters”, and should be
available to watch online @ abc.com

- Betty Davis “Walkin’ Down The Road” appeared on episode 3 of the
Showtime original series Californication.

Not bad eh?
