Record Store Day 2012 – Lee Hazlewood “The LHI Years” 2xLP & Stax 10x 45 Box Set

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

We’ll bet all of you were starting to wonder, “hey, what’s Light In The Attic got up their sleeve for Record Store Day?”. Well, no more sleepless nights tossing and turning in constant anticipation…here’s a sneak peek at our Record Store Day 2012 (April 21) releases. Stay tuned next week for in-depth info about each release plus those snazzy “What’s Inside?” videos showing off these two glorious sets. But for now, let’s just say that we are very, very, very excited to share these with you all.

Lee Hazlewood – The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, & Backsides (1968-71) (LITA 084)

  • Cuts from essential albums like Cowboy In Sweden and features duets with Suzi Jane Hokom, Ann-Margret and Nina Lizell
  • Audio re-mastered from original tapes
  • Unreleased song “I Just Learned To Run”
  • In-depth liner notes & unseen photographs
  • 50 random LP copies include a limited LHI Records patch!!!!

With his handlebar moustache and booming baritone, Lee Hazlewood was one of the defining stars of the late ‘60s. Though he’s perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit “These Boots Are Made For Walking”), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. Now, for Record Store Day 2012, we are kicking off our excavation of the Lee Hazlewood archives with this anthology, Singles, Nudes & Backsides, collecting the best of Lee’s solo songs and duets from his LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries) imprint. 2xLP housed in a deluxe gatefold Stoughton “tip-on” jacket, includes 8-page book-deep liner notes and OBI card. CD version available 4/25. Wonder what’s behind that OBI card? Guess you’ll have to wait to see…

v/A Never To Be Forgotten – The Flip Side of Stax 1968-1974 (LITA 085)

  • Only 4,000 hand-numbered copies worldwide
  • *Fifteen* random copies include autographed photos
  • Meticulously remastered from the original tapes
  • Ten 45rpm singles featuring original label and sleeve art and housed in a gorgeous custom made magnetic flip-top box
  • Extensive 84-page bound booklet brimming with informative interviews with the surviving musicians contained within and liner notes by Memphis writer Andria Lisle, candid photographs, and personal anecdotes from Stax enthusiasts and label veterans Stewart, co-owner Al Bell, and promotions manager Phillip Rauls.
  • Includes Download Card for full free download of set

Never To Be Forgotten: The Flip Side Of Stax 1968-1974 is our love letter to some of the lesser-known Stax Records artists, collected and presented in a knock-out 7” vinyl box set. Containing 10 faithfully reproduced 45-rpm singles from Mable John, Bernie Hayes, Lee Sain, Melvin Van Peebles, Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers, and John Gary Williams, in addition to label stalwarts Johnnie Taylor, Mad Lads, Emotions, and Rufus Thomas, prepare to move, groove, and be enthused. Never To Be Forgotten comes housed in a beautiful flip-top container case replete with an extensive 84-page bounded booklet brimming with informative interviews with the surviving musicians contained within and liner notes by Memphis writer Andria Lisle, candid photographs, and personal anecdotes from Stax enthusiasts and label veterans Stewart, co-owner Al Bell, and promotions manager Phillip Rauls. Plus, a free Download Card for those turntable-less moments. If you loved the Wheedle’s Groove box set, than you will flip for this one.

Save Criminal Records (Atlanta, GA) !!!

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

*Save Criminal Records logo – designed by Brian Manley/Fun With Robots.

It was way back in 2008 that we featured Criminal Records as our Record Store of the Week. Fast forward to the present day and it’s still a shop that we hit every time we’re in Atlanta…heck, we even buy from them via mailorder! Owner Eric Levin (who is also a co-founder of Record Store Day) and his great staff have been keeping the dream alive for 20 years by stocking independent music, comics, books and hosting must-see instores, but do to a host of problems are in danger of closing by November if things don’t change. Show your support of independent record stores and independent music by heading over to their shop (brick & mortar or online)! Without record stores like Criminal Records humble labels like ourselves would be nowhere. Seriously.

For other ways to show your support, “like” the Criminal Records Facebook page and the “Save Criminal Records” community page.

Record Store Day 2011 – The Black Angels “Another Nice Pair” !!!

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Record Store Day 2011 (Yo! April 16th! Get with it!) is shaping up to be the best yet. There are literally hundreds of limited edition releases hitting record stores across the globe. Unfortunately for us, many of these releases we can’t seem to live without (Big Star Third test pressing box, Flaming Lips Heady Nuggs box, etc). I guess it’s Ramen and Natural Ice for the next month! Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Just like previous years, we have some heavy awesomeness for this year’s RSD:

The Black Angels Another Nice Pair (LITA 066)

Collecting The Black Angels’ first two EPs on a single disc, Another Nice Pair is as limited, cool and righteous as it gets. Presented as a vinyl “double EP,” the A side (The Black Angels EP) includes key tracks from the critically acclaimed debut album Passover in addition to the non-album jam “Winter ’68.” The B side flip presents the original Black Angel Exit EP which was available only as a limited edition bonus EP for those who pre-ordered the band’s sophomore Directions To See A Ghost LP. This side also includes tracks that were available only as bonus material on the limited edition 3-LP version of Directions To See A Ghost, in addition to the iTunes exclusive “Black Angel Exit/Shine,” and a ripping cover of Black Mountain’s “No Satisfaction.”

In case you need more encouragement!:

  • RECORD STORE DAY EXCLUSIVE (Go support your local record store!!)
  • First time collection of the band’s first two EPs & First time on vinyl!
  • Unique “Double EP” with original artwork and limited promo insert
  • Limited edition pressing on RED VINYL with “Old-Style/Tip-On” sleeve
  • Download card included
  • Original artwork by founding member/guitarist Christian Bland
  • 100 inserts SIGNED BY THE BAND will be randomly packed through the pressing!

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

Just got in the office this week the proof for the next Light In The Attic zine! We’re up to number three at this point and they’re still a blast to put together. In this issue we have features on on our forth coming Shin Joong Hyun (dig the awesome cover art!) and Mowest anthologies, liner-notes spotlight on Michael Chapman, The Overton Berry Ensemble, some great interviews with the Winter’s Bone soundtrack star Marideth Sisco and score composer Dickon Hinchliffe, and a ton more.

This is hitting the press next week and we hope to have copies in stock at some stores for Record Store Day 2011.

As always, it’s FREEEEEEEEEE!

TOMORROW IS NATIONAL RECORD STORE DAY!

Friday, April 18th, 2008

We here at Light In The Attic love record stores.  Seriously, deep, pulsing throbbing love for a variety of reasons.  Firstly, we love record stores as fans.  Those deep crates of used and new vinyl, the stacks of shining CDs, the bulky listening stations drawing our attention to some hot new band – Christ almighty we love those places.

Secondly, we love them for what they are – keepers of the music flame.  Digital music may be one-click option to fuel yourself with sound, but record stores are tastemakers, joy-spreaders, the people you go to when you’re looking to dig a little deeper into Peruvian psych rock.  There is a lot of music out there these days and record stores are the paths that lead us to the gold, the good shit, the hidden gems just inches off the radar.

And finally we here at Light In The Attic love them because without their tireless work, exquisite taste, and goddamn quirky personalities, we’d still be hawking albums on street corners.

So get out there tomorrow and celebrate the hell out of your favorite record store.  If your in Seattle, Easy Street is throwing a free bash with performances by our good friend Mark Pickerel and Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter.
