We’re excited to announce that we’re co-presenting several sneak preview screenings across the USA of the great new film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (directed by Joann Sfar). Taking the best from La Vie en Rose and Amélie, renowned comic book artist Joann Sfar’s Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life is a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Jewish singer-songwriter, Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino). Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Sfar follows him from his precocious childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, to his beginnings as small time jazz musician and finally pop superstar. Along the way he romances many of the era’s most beautiful women, including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon). Employing a witty surrealistic style and a soundtrack that includes many of the musician’s greatest hits, Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life is a quintessential time capsule to ‘60’s Paris.

We’re GIVING AWAY one pair of tickets to screening in New York City at the New Museum (this is sold out, so these are the only tix left!) and Los Angeles at the Bootleg Theater for this Wednesday, August 24th. For your chance to win, leave your name and email address (which is kept hidden) and tell us your favorite Serge Gainsbourg song. Winners will be announced Wednesday at 9AM (PST) and 12PM (EST). Right now I’m really digging “Boomerang”
damn so many great songs! “ballad de melody nelson” never fails
Mr. William
J’adore “Chez Les Ye-Ye”, but really one the songs he wrote for France Gall “Teenie Weenie Boppie” is probably a very close second.
I really want to go to the NYC screening! Really love Serge’s earlier jazzy stuff – Intoxicated Man, if I must pick a favorite!
Le Poinçonneur des Lilas
I would say: “Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son” sang by my loving French pop idol, Ms. France Gall. She was also very popular in Japan in 60′s. My parents always went to a movie theater to see French films like this one when they were dating… cool and cute memories.
I second “Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son”. For sheer momentum, if nothing else. I always feel as if the song hurtles along at breakneck speed from start to finish. And it was the best Eurovision song ever!
“Les Petit Papiers” originally written for Regine and recorded by her, but he did a version on TV with Jane Birkin and Jacques Dutronc that is not released on anything but the television show. Thats my favorite version and song (Maybe! Hard to choose! GAH!)
