Free Basin’ Fridays – Bo Diddley!

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Earlier this week we launched Future Days Recordings–our newest imprint–with the release of Bo Diddley’s blues-psych-funk classic, The Black Gladiator. Bootlegs of questionable source (both on the audio and legal end) have been floating around for years but with this CD-only reissue, The Black Gladiator is finally in print with in-depth liner notes (by Scott Schneider) and newly remastered audio (from original tapes, transferred at 24bit/96kHz). So for this week’s Free Basin’ Fridays, we’re giving away a copy of the CD to one lucky winner.

For your chance to win, leave us a comment below with your name and email address (kept private). Tell us your favorite Bo Diddley song, album, lyric, etc…show Bo some love! Winner picked at random and announced next Friday, 3/23 at 12PM PST. See you next week!

    Ride on Josephine!

  2. Patrick says:

Gotta be “Hey Bo Diddley”. His use of third person reference was a direct influence on Rickey Henderson.

a couple of things come to mind when i think of bo, but two things in particular really stick out (aside from his legacy). the first is that bo choose to spend a good part of his later years not far away from where i grew up in florida. the second is a video cassete a friend left at my house of a 1970′s hell’s angels boat party, that left from somewhere in new york i believe, in which the jerry garcia band and bo each give great performances to a hoot and hollerin’ crowd.

…wind blew her hair into the street!

  5. Kyle says:

Gotta be “Bad Trip”, the guitar in that song is so funkin nasty!

  6. Lisa says:

Since the Black Gladiator album is a funky gem, I will have to go with “Funky Fly”, great guitar and organ riffing off one another a definite funk classic!

I’m the greatest lover in the world.. I think it was just on a single.. You have to be freakin’ charmful to pull it off with a title like that.. and Bo did it like the real playboy that he was. The billy childish version is pretty good as well.

  8. Eric Falardeau says:

A great hommage is Bo Didley is a Haadhunter by Roky Erickson.
But regarding Bo, I’d go with Bo Diddley Is a Lover. Great album!

  9. Jim Bruzzese says:

“You Can’t Judge A Book By The Cover”. Go Bo Go!

  10. jamiebliss says:

    who do you love …

  11. M Snodgrass says:

‘Road Runner’ is a gem jam. I like ‘Diddy Wah Diddy’ too…a much-covered and coveted track. Bo knew way more than Diddley!

  12. Jesus says:

“Go For Broke” from ‘Another Dimension’. Classic break!

  13. David says:

The coolest thing about Bo has got to be his signature “cigar box” Gretch guitar guitar.

  14. Henry Bob says:

    Hello all,
Bo’s guitars have always been a fascination of mine.

  15. Cahn Curtis says:

Any dude that names a song after himself is the definition of bad assery! So I go for the song Bo Diddley!

  16. Ramone666 says:

Who Do You Love of course. Cobra snake for a necktie!

  17. Joshua Davis says:

Bo Diddley is a god! Not Eric Clapton. I wish ” Diddley Daddy” could be a song long enough to fill the side of a long playing record.

  18. So the Checker Label LP MSM-37188 I have is a debatable re-issue? It states on the bottom “Originally released as Checker LPS-3013″ If your talking sound issues, im not one to complain. Considering favorite Bo Diddley side, too many, but I could slap ‘The Clock Strikes Twelve’ Checker 7″ on & get anybody to move on that one, goosebumps everytime!

  19. Ben says:

Obscure favorite for me: “Moon Baby” from 1991′s Rare & Well Done compilation.

My extensive Bo CD collection definitely needs this reissue, even though I already have all the songs. Can’t wait to hear the new remastering!

  20. admin says:

    Hi Billy,

No debating the sound quality original pressings at all. There are a few European LP bootlegs of this that suffer from poor (or no) remastering.

    Thanks,
    LITA

  21. Rich Z. in N.J. says:

Nice liner notes by Scott Schinder by the way…

  22. David Malys says:

An obvious choice but these 4 lines

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire
I use a cobra snake for a necktie
I got a brand new house on the roadside
    Made from rattlesnake hide

just sum up the brilliance of Bo

  23. Rob says:

So glad you guys are re-releasing this awesome album. Favorite song, I Don’t Like You!

  24. Sun Maritnez says:

I admire what you get completed right here. I love the part where you say you are generally doing this kind of to give back but I would assume by all the comments that is working for you as well. Do you get any much more data on this kind of?
