Documentary about Spokane, WA 80s punk scene!?!? – SpokAnarchy!

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Who would’ve thought? Check the trailer (below) for yourself…SpokAnarchy! chronicles the manic highs and desperate lows in the emergence of the alternative music scene in culturally barren Spokane, Washington. Before MTV, before the Internet and cell phones, Spokane seemed a long way from anywhere. A small group of bored teenagers banded together to make art and music and live a lifestyle that tested the social and moral boundaries of conservative America.

From the late 70s through the 1980s, Spokane had a diverse array of bands in sound and style. Like many small scenes, often times wildly different acts would appear on the same bill. Especially in the early days, shows were not a regular event and with so few bands some bands lasted only one show.

Most of these bands were formed in Spokane and existed only then and there. Some towards the bottom of the page were formed by Spokanites who moved away. Some of these tracks were recorded in professional studios, but most were recorded on a humble 4-track tape recorder (or worse!) in a living room. All are passionate, unique, and show the range of what came out of “the world’s largest hick town” in the 1980’s.

“Searching For Sugar Man” | Music Doc on Rodriguez @ Sundance

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

We are beyond excited to share this with all of you. A truly beautiful film, Searching For Sugar Man (directed by Malik Bendjelloul) is set to premier at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Check the synopsis below for the full story. Are you heading to Sundance yourself? Then check out the offical site here for all the screening times. LITA’s Matt Sullivan will be in attendance and Tweeting live, so be sure to follow us for lots of photos and a few surprises over the week.

Rodriguez was the greatest ’70s U.S. rock icon who never was. His albums were critically well-received, but sales bombed, and he faded away into obscurity among rumors of a gruesome death. However, as fate would have it, a bootleg copy of his record made its way to South Africa, where his music became a phenomenal success. In a country suppressed by apartheid, his antiestablishment message connected with the people.

When his second album finally gets released on CD in South Africa, two fans take it as a sign, deciding to look into the mystery of how Rodriguez died and what happened to all of the profits from his album sales. Since very little information about the singer exists, they meet many obstacles until they uncover a shocking revelation that sets off a wild chain of events that has to be seen to be believed. SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN is a story of hope, inspiration, and the resonating power of music. - T.G.

Help fund “Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me” music documentary on Kickstarter!

Monday, June 11th, 2012

OK full disclosure here, Light In The Attic’s Patrick McCarthy (his sister is co-director/producer Danielle McCarthy) has been involved with the making of this documentary about the legendary Memphis band Big Star since the beginning, but it’s too good not to share! About this film:

BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME is a feature-length documentary about legendary Memphis band Big Star. While mainstream success eluded them, Big Star’s three albums have become critically lauded touchstones of the rock music canon. A seminal band in the history of alternative music, Big Star has been cited as an influence by artists including REM, The Replacements, Belle & Sebastian, Elliot Smith and Teenage Fanclub, to name just a few. With never-before-seen footage and photos of the band, in-depth interviews and a rousing musical tribute by the bands they inspired, BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME is a story of artistic and musical salvation.

The documentary is in it’s final stages of production and entering the post phase but the project needs more funding to put this baby to bed. Head on over to the KickStarter page to watch a new trailer for the doc and see the various levels of funding, each with some great gifts in return. Only 16 days left to reach the full funding goal! Stay up to date on the doc’s development by following their Twitter and Facebook pages. And like Big Star sang, “Thank You Friends”!!!
