Fat Beats 45: Mr. Holmes & the Brotherhood (Wheedle’s Groove) – Win A Free Record!!

Friday, May 13th, 2011

It all started in Los Angeles with a chance meeting at a house show in an old Victorian home. The LITA crew rolled in, only to find the sprawling NYC collective–CSC Funk Band–tearing up the stage with a cover of “Thrift Store Find” by Mr. Holmes & the Brotherhood as heard on Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75! After their absolutely scorching set, we picked up our jaws off the floor and immediately cornered the band to get the scoop. Long story short, many friends were shared in common and an idea was sparked – a 45 featuring the original deep funk cut of “Thrift Store Find” with the sprawling psych-funk cover by CSC Funk Band on the flip. Sound too good to be true? Believe it.

CSC Funk Band

Brought to you by our buds at Fat Beats, this killer collaboration is now available on glorious vinyl. You can order it HERE.

But hey, it’s Friday, and we’re feeling generous, SO, we’re offering ONE free copy of the 45 shipped directly to your door. For your chance to win, leave your name and email in the comment field below (email is kept private and not shared). On Monday we’ll pick a name at random and BAM!, the record is yours!

Thanks to all the fans that entered the contest and for CSC Funk Band and Fat Beats for putting the 45 out!. As you can see from the pictures above, the selection process performed by LITA’s blog scribe Patrick McCarthy (and over-seeen by SS LITA’s Matt Sullivan) was extremely scientific and included drawing the name from an old cowboy hat given to us by Stephen John Kalinich!

Earlier this week we launched Future Days Recordings–our newest imprint–with the release of Bo Diddley’s blues-psych-funk classic, The Black Gladiator. So for this week’s Free Basin’ Fridays, we’re giving away a copy of the CD to one lucky winner.

Free Basin’ Friday – Erkin Koray: Elektronik Turkuler Giveaway!

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Another week bites the dust! TGIF, it’s Free Basin’ Friday and we’re here to hook you up with some fresh wax. This week we are giving away a copy of Erkin Koray’s sophomore LP, Elektronik Türküler!

This benchmark record from 1974 taught Istanbul’s musicians & pop fans how to put Turkish folk songs from the 17th century together with meaty, thundering guitar solos. With a crack bass player by his side (Ahmet Güvenç from Bunalim & Baris Manco’s Kurtalan Ekspres) & an electrified bağlama in his hands, Erkin Koray lets his gloomy baritone voice float over wiry double-reed melodies, bulging riffs, & hammer-ons that go on for-friggin-ever.

The last time we posted about Erkin we got a slew of angry comments for calling him “Turkey’s answer to Eric Clapton” – so, for your chance to win, leave a comment below and tell us a reason you love OR hate Eric Clapton! Make sure to include your name and email address (kept private) in the proper field so we can contact you if you win! Prize is available on CD or LP, so don’t be shy! Good luck and have a killer weekend!

Famously, the Big Boys would end their sets with the foursome shouting, “OK y’all, go start your own band.” So, for your chance to win, go start your own fictitious band, fantasy football style! Pick any musicians (living or dead), tell us the lineup, and give yourselves a name! Winner will be chosen and announced next Friday! Be sure to leave your name and email address (kept private) in the proper field, so we can contact you if you win! Good luck, y’all! Have a great weekend!
