This Just In – Index – Holy Grail Psych From Lion Productions

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Our turntables have been getting a bit dusty recently since this gem came in. Index were a mid ’60s suburban Detroit band that dipped far into a bizarre, atmosphere–read “druggie”–sound. Black Album + Red Album + Yesterday & Today (from our pals at Lion Productions) collects their two holy grail psychedelic records (from 1967-68) coupled with a disc of recently discovered unreleased material, all from the original tapes.

This 2-CD set is filled with songs full of feedback and fuzzy guitars, hazy guitar riffs and loud rhythms. Hidden amongst the echoing canyons of sound there’s some snotty post-punk attitude wrapped up in that trippy velvet fuzz; a wonderful bleak sound, both droning and murky—the atonal side of late 1960’s rock that would leave the most lasting impression on those who would eventually become punk, post-punk and indie rock artists like Joy Division or the Fall.

Includes a 32-page booklet, written by Index drummer Jim Valice, detailing the band’s rock and roll adventures, replete with photos and lyrics.

Heavy Doomsday Psych from “Jerusalem” (Lion Productions)!

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

The genius of the folks at Lion Productions shines through again with this, the first official vinyl reissue of Jerusalem’s 1972 LP Jerusalem. This timeless and heavy UK hard rock album was produced by Deep Purple’s legendary frontman, Ian Gillan, and was originally released on the Decca/Deram label. At the time, it was Gillan who said of Jerusalem: “Not many bands really excite me. But this one’s so raw and completely unpretentious. They make the biggest, bloodiest noise you can imagine, tempered with moments of extreme emotion.”

Man, could words ever speak more truth?! Contained in this LP’s grooves is a menacing combination of over-the-top vocals and screaming lead guitars that could easily pass for something from the early British heavy metal scene. A holy grail record for collectors for years, this LP sounds better than ever with re-mastering of all tracks from the original master tapes. And as for looks, it’s lookin’ good with the wax housed in a high quality old-style gatefold cover and liner notes written by bassist Paul Dean (+ rare photos). Rough, raw, and doomy!

More Crate Digging Gems from Lion Productions

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Another fine release from our friends at Lion Productions. Miguel y el Comité is a crate-digger’s dream, mixing South American candombe rhythm with beat music in an unusual and aggressive (oft-times funky, break-beat) way. Percussion plays a key role in the band’s sound, although the guitar playing is most distinctive: sometimes melodic, at other times carving a path through the mix, with a hard and acid distorted fuzz guitar sound, as on the title track and the fabulous cover of El Kinto’s ‘Qué me importa.’ Dynamite! Comes with a 28-page booklet, printed on FSCrecycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy, with band history, photos, and bi-lingual lyrics.

Bay Area PSYCH-FUNK with Aura – “Sativa” (Lion Productions)

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Aura was a San Francisco Psych-Funk band that formed in 1974 and played extensively throughout Northern California. By 1976, the band recorded their first and only album at Pacific Recording Studio in San Mateo. The original title of the album was meant to be Sativa, but out of fear that promoting the joys of marijuana would be too controversial, the band omitted the title and just left it as “Aura”. Over the ensuing decades, the Aura album has grown in stature to become a major soul/funk collector’s item. In 1991, the Oakland hip-hop band,“Oaktown’s 357”(MC Hammer’s Salt-N-Pepa type band) sampled ‘Mess Up Your Mind’ for their song ‘Turn It Up,’ which also helped to raise the profile of the Aura album to cult status.

Replete with rare band memorabilia and three previously unreleased bonus tracks, the lone album of Aura is now available for the first time on CD, (thankfully) from the original master tapes. The album is a heavy slab of Bay Area history, as well as a psych funk masterpiece that cannot be denied.

“The Cool Aid Benefit Album: Deluxe Edition” | 2xLP Pre-Order

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Opened in 1968, the “Cool Aid House” in Vancouver was a home for rambling homeless youth and Hippies. The commune drop-out vibe aside, the Cool Aid House was a non-profit that helped young people get off the street and back on their feet. As a non-profit, they relied heavily on support form donations and the Canadian government–a relationship that was threatened to dissolve by 1970. Come 1969, in steps UBC student John Walsh with an idea to record a benefit album to raise funds to save the house. All of the top bands in the Vancouver area offered to record songs for the benefit album and since the local music scene produced some of the best bands in Canada, the album that resulted is a stunning snapshot of Vancouver’s young music scene.

Mother Tuckers Yellow Duck

A long sought-after collector’s item, The Cool Aid Benefit Album was originally intended as a two-record set, however contractual problems with Capitol Records forced Walsh to drop tracks by Mother Tucker’s Yellow Duck, which with their inclusion now, make this the first reissue as well as the first release as the intended 2xLP. Other cuts include the strange proto-electronic burbles of Mock Duck on ‘As the Bullet Enters Anton’ and ‘Pointillistic Scherzo’, the vicious snarl of Black Snake’s ‘Carousel,’ and the strange Spalding Grey-ish acoustic song/poem ‘The Planet Man.’ Hydro Electric Street Car have left little behind them, but their lovely ‘High Memory’ sounds like a lost Grateful Dead track from their early, dreamy period.

Released by Lion Production in conjunction with Light In The Attic, The Cool Aid Benefit Album: Deluxe Edition is a stunning 2xLP package—limited to 1,000, hand-numbered copies—featuring Vancouver’s top bands of the day: Mother Tucker’s Yellow Duck, Papa Bear’s Medicine Show, Mock Duck, Hydro Electric Streetcar, Route Nine, Blacksnake Blues Band, Nancy, Spring, and Greydon Moore and Leo Jung. Obscure cuts available nowhere else, in a wide variety of styles: weird electronic sounds, heavy garage fuzz guitar freakouts, stoner rock, and acoustic folk.

Scott Key – “This Forest and the Sea” | Lion Productions | 180-G LP

Scott Key - This Forest and the Sea
LION116 (LP)
ORDER NOW!

Out now on Lion Productions, Scott Key’s This Forest and the Sea, an excellent 1976 private press acoustic album, self-recorded at various places in Colorado. From start to finish, this album is filled with beautiful finger style acoustic guitar, plus some atonal bottleneck slide, string scrapes and drones (at times, very Ry Cooder / Paris, Texas about six years before that soundtrack existed). Although almost completely instrumental, what lyrics there are tend towards the dark and the satiric. The obvious points of comparison are John Fahey and Leo Kottke, although Scott Key certainly has his own presence and style, differences in tone and color and attack, which he attributes to his background in rock bands.

Overall, there is a brooding, loner folk/psych feel, most evident on the phenomenal, effects-heavy, almost 11-minute long title track, ‘This Forest and the Sea.’ “I was coming to terms with what it mean to exist… and saw the world in pure black and white—there was no room for grey,” Key said. “I saw an American Culture devoid of any understanding of its place in the universe, how we learn nothing save what we see on television, how our existence is tainted by intellectual laziness, and how our gift of life is defiled by the taking of it.” This deluxe 180-gram vinyl LP edition of This Forest and the Sea comes with an insert which sports engaging, funny, and insightful notes by Key, photos, plus the text to poem that inspired the title track; as a nod to the forest. A very rare album that seems to have flown under almost everyone’s radar—although thankfully not Doug McGowan’s (Yoga Records), who sent this our way. One record collector said to us, and we now say to you: “Have a listen because this rates up there with classics by Bob Desper, Perry Leopold, Robbie Basho, and Phil Yost, with dark moods similar to John Fahey and Nick Drake.”
