2011…BRING IT ON!

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

clink!

Well, well…here we are. We strung up ol’ 2010 like a big piñata and nocked that sucker to a million pieces. And what’s left? Read on…

As many of you saw in our 2011 Light In The Attic Subscription Series, we have a whole bunch of releases coming out this year, plus more that haven’t been announced yet!

Coming up real soon is a release from British psych-folk master Michael Chapman and his righteous 1970 masterpiece Fully Qualified Survivor. We’ve been working hard on this release and the deluxe gatefold old-style jacket looks so darn good. And the wax? 180 gram pure goodness. The record sounds better than ever!

Also be on the lookout for snotty garage rockers The Vagrants! Now you can finally find out what a young Johnny Ramone was digging when he was just a wee lad kicking around Queens, NY. You may also know the band from their cover of “Respect”, included on Lenny Kaye’s almighty Nuggets compilation, or their guitarist, a young pre-Mountain Leslie West.

And let’s not forget the always sublime Overton Berry! In 2011 we’ll be releasing a double album package of the Overton Berry Trio’s landmark T.O.B.T. album with the rare At Seattle’s Doubletree Inn LP. Heavy 180 gram wax and a gatefold sleeve round out this release. Come on, you just can’t say no!

But wait! What’s that little bit of sunshine just poking through? Well, that’d be the beautiful sunny sound of Mowest! That’s right, literally years in the works is our comp of the legendary Motown subsidiary label Mowest (1971-1973). This marks the first time any of these tracks have been complied and the release will feature exellent liner notes by Kevin Sipreano (who wrote notes for our reissues of RodriguezMonksDoug Randle, and the six part Jamaica to Toronto Series). Re-mastered from the original master tapes, these essential gems sound like a zillion bucks. Better put on that sunscreen!

…and there’s so, so much more. Keep on the look out, as 2011 is shaping up to be our best year yet!

Happy New Year  from all of us at Light In The Attic!

Michael Chapman album preview TONIGHT in Los Angeles!

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Hey ho Los Angeles friends! Tonight we’ll be having a special preview of the forthcoming (album drops next week) Michael Chapman album Fully Qualified Survivor at El Prado in Echo Park.  Tonight’s preview is co-presented by our good friends at Origami Vinyl and El Prado as part of their Record Club Night weekly series where guests are invited to bring copies of their favorite albums and play an entire side of the record.

We’re still on the fence as to which side of Fully Qualified Survivor to play, but we’re leaning towards the more “bar friendly” Side B where guitarist Mick Ronson (yes, that Mick Ronson) really tears shit up. Come out and find out which side gets spun! The Light In The Attic crew will be there in full effect!

Details, as always:

9PM – 2AM (Chapman will be up in the first hour)

Michael Chapman “Fully Qualified Survivor” CD/LP PRE-ORDER!!!

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Oh yeah! Are you ready to get qualified??? Fans of John Martyn, Roy Harper, and Bert Jansch get ready for a little trip back to England in 1970 when the Harvest label was was playing mother hen to the psych-folk-rock scene. First time ever on CD and the first vinyl reissue in decades, this reissue of Michael Chapman’s classic 1970 album Fully Qualified Survivor sports re-mastered audio, old school tip-on gatefold jacket, 180-gram vinyl, rare archival photos, and notes by Mick Houghton (Uncut). And for you CD lovers, better put on your shades when picking this one up, as the silver foil deluxe Digipak is a real shiner!

Although not as well known as his peers, the name Michael Chapman is an important one in the linage of English folk rock guitarists and singer/songwriters of the late 60’s/early 70’s. For those unfamiliar with Chapman’s work, Roy Harper might be his closest musical cousin (and both artists were signed to EMI’s seminal stoner record label Harvest – also home to Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett).

Like other Harvest artists, Chapman’s music contains a slightly drugged out feel, sublime guitar playing and intense lyrics. What makes Fully Qualified Survivor such a special album (besides being a vehicle for a young Mick Ronson’s mind-blowing guitar heroics) are the layers of beautiful acoustic guitars, deranged vocals, floating conga drums, and the cello of one Paul Buckmaster – the same man who provided the intense strings on Elton John’s dark masterpiece Mad Man Across The Water.

File this record between Roy Harper’s Flat Baroque and Berserk, John Martyn’s Inside Out, and Bert Jansch’s Jack Orion and you’ll be doing fine. The perfect album for a winter day and a joint.

Michael Chapman Fully Qualified Survivor hits the streets Tuesday, February 16th but you may PRE-ORDER it now HERE!

Michael Chapman “Fully Qualified Survivor” NOW AVAILABLE!

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Marking our 60th release on Light In The Attic, we give you the 1970 Brittish psych/folk/rock classic–Michael Chapman’s Fully Qualified Survivor! This reissue marks the first time Fully Qualified Survivor has ever appeared on CD in the US and the first vinyl reissue in decades. And speaking of the vinyl and CD, they both get the usual deluxe treatment. Housed in a stunning silver foil digipak, the CD also includes a booklet with archival photos and liner notes by Mick Hougton (Uncut). The vinyl got plenty of love too–sporting a deluxe gatefold old school “tip-on” sleeve holding a delicious slab of 180 gram vinyl and including a booklet with the same liner notes and photos as the CD.

So, who is this guitar slinger??? Read on…

The guitar and voice of Michael Chapman first became known on the British Folk Circuit in 1967. Playing a blend of atmospheric and autobiographical material, he established a reputation for intensity and innovation. Signed to EMI’s Harvest label he recorded a quartet of classic albums. LPs like Rainmaker and Wrecked Again defined the melancholic observer role Michael was to make his own, mixing intricate guitar instrumentals with a full band sound.

Although not as well known as his peers (Roy Harper, John Marytn, and Bert Jansch), the name Michael Chapman is an important one in the linage of English folk rock guitarists and singer/songwriters of the late 60’s/early 70’s. For those unfamiliar with Chapman’s work, Roy Harper might be his closest musical cousin (and both artists were signed to EMI’s seminal stoner record label Harvest – also home to Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett). What makes Fully Qualified Survivor such a special album (besides being a vehicle for a young, pre-David Bowie Mick Ronson’s mind-blowing guitar heroics) are the layers of beautiful acoustic guitars, deranged vocals, floating conga drums, and the cello of one Paul Buckmaster, all floating in a slightly druggy haze.
