THE BLACK ANGELS RETURN TO SEATTLE!

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Seattle, Washington … are … you … ready … to … ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCK?  Or something

Why?  Because tomorrow night, our favorite Austin, Texas psych-rock band The Black Angels are dropping by old Neumo’s for a couple of shows with their friends The Warlocks.  You boneheads who bumbled about and didn’t buy tickets for the show and then complained when it sold out – well you have nothing to bitch about anymore.  Due to the newly imposed, impressively-draconian, capacity requirements, The Black Angels have added a second late show.

This is how it all breaks down:

June 11th @ Neumos

The Black Angels

2 shows (21+)

Doors open at 7 and 10:30.

If you haven’t seen The Black Angels live, you’ve missed out, and here’s your chance to redeem yourself.

OH SEATTLE WE LOVE YOU SO!

Friday, June 13th, 2008

You know, we live in a pretty great place, this here Seattle.  Big trees, beautiful water, the ever-looming corporate presence of Starbucks (heart) – what isn’t there to love about this place?

Sure, we’ve some things to be complaining about: the weather (passively, because that’s how we roll), how shitty our Mariners are (get rid of Sexson, that dudes a money hole!), or the fact that our basketball team is going the way of the tumbleweeds (damn you Clay Bennett).  But c’mon this is a marvelous city, and here’s a couple of reasons why:

1.  HAROLD AND MAUDE AT THE NORTHWEST FILM FORUM!

Yup, the greatest love story about an 80 year old and a suicidal high schooler, well, ever is being screened for an entire month and a half (July 1 – August 20) at our beloved Northwest Film Forum.  This, if ya’ll remember, would be Hal Ashby’s revered masterpiece scored by the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens.  The beloved soundtrack that Cameron Crowe recently re-released on vinyl to massive fanfare from the music-loving world.  Yes, that fucking film will be screening for an entire month at the Northwest Film Forum.  Seattle: 1, rest of world: 0.

2.  THE SATURDAY KNIGHTS RECORD RELEASE WITH THE BUDOS BAND

Ah shit sucka, The Saturday Knights are dropping the hottest summer album, well, ever on the 24th and in celebration of this monumental occasion, they’re throwing a fucking party.  June 27th at Nectar Lounge in Fremont, the trio will hit the stage to rock a song or ten or four hundred for a crowd of their favorite fans (those being the ones who buy tickets!).  If that wasn’t cool enough, opening up is none other than the legendary BUDOS BAND.  They alone will make your night, your week, your lifetime, but throw in the main course of Saturday Knights’ goodness and you’ve got magic for an entire family of Mormon’s lifetimes.  Be there, or be a quadrangle.

Oh Seattle!  We love you so!

One Cool Cat - Overton Berry

Last week in anticipation of our latest release–Overton Berry Ensemble T.O.B.E. / At Seattle’s Doubletree Innwe thought it would be great to sit down with the man himself, Overton Berry, and get the back story on these two legendary Seattle soul/jazz/funk albums. And who would we ask to be the interviewer but T.O.B.E. / At Seattle’s Doubletree Inn liner notes writer Kurt B. Reighley.

“Wheedle’s Groove” – 3 1/2 Stars – Rolling Stone!

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Big news this week for Wheedle’s Groove! Run out and pick up the March 31, 2011 (#1132) issue of Rolling Stone–yeah, the one with Howard Stern on the cover–and flip as quickly as possible to page 68. Whoop there it is! Barry Walters calls Wheedle’s Groove an “exceptionally good-looking doc” in which “the real stars are the unsung heroes who now live as ordinary folk but were once superfly kings of the ghetto.” Congrats to filmmaker Jennifer Maas and all of the musicians that made this film what it is.

Kearney Barton: Legendary Recording Console on eBay

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Friends,

As you may have seen in our Twitter feed this week, Dave Segal wrote a great piece on Northwest recording engineer Kearney Barton (as in Wheedle’s Groove Kearney Barton) in the latest edition of The Stranger. Check it out online HERE!

Sadly, Kearney’s health is quickly deteriorating and he had to retire after over six decades of recording Northwest music.  Our friend and mastering guru Dave Cooley has been helping Kearney sell his music gear to cover health bills.  The man’s legendary custom build, one-of-a-kind, Langevin recording console is now on eBay – check out the listing for full info and photos. It’s pretty incredible–The Kingsmen, The Standells, The Sonics, Earl Hines, Paul Bley, and many others recorded on this very console.

Kearney has arguably recorded more music than anyone in the entire Pacific Northwest, dating back to 1958, including rock, jazz, sitar music, country, psych, folk, operas, classical, radio jingles, the list goes on and on – Quincy Jones to The Sonics.  His significance to Northwest music history cannot be understated.

We’re currently working with Kearney, his family, and the University of Washington to digitize thousands of analog reels from Kearney’s endless audio archive, and eventually release some of this material on CD/LP/Digital. The University is now preserving over 1,500 reels, but we’re looking to find a safe place – ideally a local Seattle museum – to house the remainder of the archive and then locate funding to pay for months of professional digitizing.

Please spread the word.  We could use your help.
