The Free Design – Kites Are Fun (50th Anniversary Edition)

* LP housed in a deluxe gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket
* 50th Anniversary Record Store Day Black Friday edition
* “Golden Sky” color wax
* Updated booklet with liner notes by Michael White
* Newly restored artwork

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of Light In The Attic’s very first reissues, we are bringing back The Free Design’s debut album, Kites Are Fun. Featuring lyrics rife with social commentary masked by sugary yet complex harmonies and jazzy progressions, Kites Are Fun is a sunshine-bubblegum-daisy-puppy pop masterpiece that stands the test of time. Fans of the Beach Boys, the 5th Dimension and other seminal pop artists will wonder how they could’ve overlooked this 1967 gem, now admired by the likes of Beck, Madlib, and Belle & Sebastian.

The Free Design never achieved mainstream fame – an injustice that still puzzles many critics. Born out of the the Greenwich Village scene of 1966, the family act was filling New York City coffee houses with dreamy, deceptively complex harmonies when acclaimed producer Enoch Light signed the siblings – Bruce, Chris, and Sandy Dedrick – to his Project 3 label. One year later, The Free Design debuted with Kites Are Fun. By 1972 they had released six albums, but with the likes of Zappa, Zeppelin, and Bowie on the scene, their tightly-knit vocal arrangements and intricately beautiful melodies were drowned out by the glitz and glamour of more heavy-hitters.

Nine of the album’s song are originals, notably the title track, which became an instant soft-pop classic; well-chosen covers, including the Beatles’ “Michelle” and Simon & Garfunkels’ “The 59th Street Bridge Song,” complete the collection. This Record Store Day Black Friday, 50 years after its original release, Light In The Attic is proud to introduce The Free Design to a new generation of listeners.

Willie Nelson – Spirit

* Official Record Store Day Black Friday Selection
* Limited to 2,500 copies worldwide on GOLD wax
* First ever vinyl release
* Newly remastered audio
* LP housed in a deluxe gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket

Willie Nelson’s 1996 album Spirit is an emotional concept album illustrating the forlorn tale of a man abandoned by the great love of his life. We follow him down the path of loss as he confronts grief, gets back on his feet, and eventually finds solace in acceptance. While producing Spirit, Nelson assuredly knew the commercial risks behind releasing an album this melancholic. After all, in 1973 he himself wrote “sad songs and waltzes ain’t selling this year.” Beloved by those familiar with Nelson’s deep catalog, Spirit largely slipped through the cracks in the mainstream, but remains highly revered amongst critics and fans alike.

Backed by legendary country fiddler Johnny Gimble (of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys), sister Bobbie Nelson on piano, and his longtime touring guitarist Jody Payne, the song-cycle is anchored by lilting Spanish-inspired instrumentals that absorb a lonesome gravity when placed next to ballads that tug at even the most unwavering heartstrings. Likened to Bob Dylan’s Time Out Of Mind or Waylon Jennings’ Right For the Time, Spirit sees Nelson maturing most gracefully: he trades rousing sing-alongs and saloon tunes for gut-wrenching lyrics and instrumentation of greater precision and skill, proving this release as deep and as challenging as his career-defining albums released twenty years before.

Originally released by Island Records in 1996, Spirit is issued here on vinyl for the first time as a special Record Store Day Black Friday release. Newly remastered with a deluxe, gatefold, ‘tip-on’ uncoated jacket, this is a chance to own this unique album in its most beautifully presented form.

Bernie Worrell - All The Woo In The World

* RSD Black Friday Exclusive Release limited to 1,500 copies
* Pressed on orange wax
* Total must-have funk classic from 1978 featuring George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker & Fred Wesley
* First official North American vinyl release since 1978

Bernie Worrell (1944-2016) needs little introduction. He was an American keyboardist, arranger & composer best known as a founding member of Parliament/Funkadelic and for his work with Talking Heads. The list of his musical collaborations is extensive and includes renowned artists and acts from the likes of Manu Dibango, Bill Laswell, Fela Kuti, Jack Bruce, Mike Watt and Les Claypool. Bernie Worrell’s list of achievements is equally impressive: highlights include his induction in as a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and receiving an honorary Doctor of Music Degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2016.

All The Woo In The World’ was Bernie Worrell’s solo debut album, originally released in 1978 on Arista, the album features various P-funk alumni including George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Eddie Hazel.

When you listen to ‘All The Woo In The World’ it’s no wonder David Byrne wanted Worrell to record and perform with Talking Heads. The album, co-produced with George Clinton, is so funky you can smell it through the dust jacket. In seven tracks, Worrell shows how important he was to the P-Funk sound—in fact, the whole thing could easily be passed off as a lost Parliament/Funkadelic record, if not for Worrell’s name up top. it has everything: layered sounds, a toe-tapping midtempo beat, and some incredible horns. It proved to be a classic platter of cosmic slop: funky, loose R&B (with just a bit of disco flavor).

The Autumn Defense – Circles

* Black Friday 2017 Exclusive Release
* 2nd album from The Autumn Defense, composed of multi-instrumentalists John Stirratt and Pat Sansone
* Limited to 1,000 copies and pressed on black wax

Wilco’s John Stirratt and Pat Sansone blend timeless orchestral pop and silk-soft country-folk as The Autumn Defense. Circles, their expertly realised sophomore album, has long been their most sought-after record. Out of print on vinyl for almost a decade, it has increasingly fetched eye-watering sums on the secondary market, regularly selling for over $100. For Black Friday Record Store Day 2017, Be With Records presents the first ever reissue, lovingly remastered with upgraded artwork throughout and strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

Underpinned by delicately picked guitar, warm piano and flurries of brass, Circles positively glows. Harmonies loom and fade like headlights in fog; imagine The Blue Nile doing Bacharach and David in Topanga Canyon. Spare, golden and peaceable, softer and less psych-heavy than its predecessor, this album is a slow, richly melodic tribute to beloved early 70s songwriters. Swinging from Gene Clark country to Big Star pop, it sparkles with superb arrangements and flawless playing. Boasting a few familiar guests – Jeff Tweedy makes an appearance, adding subtle guitar figures to “Why I’m Like This”, and Andrew Bird scrapes his violin on “The Answer” – Circles effortlessly reveals a blue-green beauty trembling beneath.

Far more intuitive than their debut, it’s a mellow stretch of earthy folk-pop, where horns and strings are used because they sound nice, not out of a self-appointed duty to past musical idols. It exudes the ameliorative qualities of an escape record that was made during downtime, for downtime – while mentally liberated from the pressures of the daily world, where the two writers could reflect upon the geyser of circles that is life.
