Black Friday Record Store Day 2015!

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

We are very excited to announce our two limited edition vinyl offerings for this year’s Black Friday Record Store Day (11/27)! Per Record Store Day tradition, these releases are not available for online pre-sale, and will only be available for in-store purchase at your nearest record shop beginning 11/27.

The Sonics - Fifty

In celebration of their half-century as a recording act, we proudly present our limited edition vinyl box set of legendary garage-rock pioneers The Sonics! The set includes the band’s complete and essential Etiquette Records catalog.

  • Includes exact replicas of “Here Are The Sonics” and “Boom!” albums with “Volume 3”, a ten-track collection of Sonics rarities.
  • Deluxe all ‘tip-on’ box set with 3 LPs, book, folded 18”x24” poster, and download card

Lee Robinson Machine - Family Album

We’re also very excited to be co-releasing, Lee Robinson Machine’s Family Album, with our friends at Munster Records. This is the first ever vinyl reissue of this strange, one-of-a-kind album recorded in Madrid in 1997 by Englishman Lee Robinson. In his only solo LP, we hear an eclectic mix of blues, electronic, reggae, psych, pop, and post-punk influences.

This limited edition reissue, finally available on vinyl as Lee originally intended, is a long overdue tribute to an incredibly special artist and album, and comes as the highest personal recommendation of both Munster and LITA.

Podcast Trivia RSD Giveaway!

Friday, May 1st, 2015

 free base

In honor of our brand spankin’ new LITA Podcast and because so many of y’alls have been asking where you can get Shogun Assassin and Teatro now that RSD has passed, we’re holding a trivia contest based on Episode 1 of the podcast so we can give a few copies out for free! For a chance to win Shogun or Teatro, listen to the podcast and answer the below trivia questions + a bonus question in an email to SOCIAL@LIGHTINTHEATTIC.NET (Hint- there’s one question per segment):

  1. Shogun: What track from the Shogun soundtrack did we preview a snippet of on the podcast (not the song that’s playing in the movie trailer)?
  2. Teatro: In how many days was Teatro recorded?
  3. The Zine: Which LITA ‘wordsmith’ coined the term “Behind The Bulb”?
  4. In a fight to the death between Lone Wolf (the shogun’s assassin) and Willie Nelson, who would win and how?

You must answer the 3 trivia questions correctly to qualify and then out of those who qualify, we’ll pick our top 3 favorite creative responses to question 4 as the winners, who can then request either Shogun or Teatro as their prize! And each winner will receive a complimentary LITA zine.

Put in them earbuds and have a listen to the podcast in the audio player below, on iTunes, at this link, or on our SoundCloud or YouTube pages.

The LITA Podcast Is Here!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-04-14 at 12.30.44 PM

Ohhh it’s been a long time comin’, but we done did it! We are so beyond stoked to finally be presenting the Light In The Attic Podcast!

For years we’ve wanted to put together a podcast because so often the stories behind our releases are as awesome as the music itself– stories of missed opportunities, lost labors of love, unsolved mysteries, treasure hunting, second chances, and redemption! This podcast will be devoted to telling you these stories, playing the music itself, and welcoming you into the attic to hang with the characters behind LITA releases.

In our first episode, we discuss our Record Store Day 2015 releases- Shogun Assassin, Teatro, and the LITA Zine. You’ll hear music from Shogun, Teatro, and Native North America, an interview with Willie Nelson & Daniel Lanois, and an interview with the editor of the LITA zine, Lydia Hyslop.

We’re already working on episode two which will focus on the story behind just one release, our most recent reissue of 1984 folk album Songs From Suicide Bridge. We can’t wait to share that episode with you as well.

Have a listen in the audio player below, on iTunes, at this link, or on SoundCloud or YouTube.

Thanks for checking it out, we hope you like it!

Record Store Day 2015!!!

unnamed 2

Is it vinyl Christmas already?! Boy have we got some treats for ya this year…

Shogun Assassin

The Wu-Tang Clan is obsessed. It’s Kill Bill heroine Beatrix Kiddo’s favorite bedtime story. It’s an “awesome spectacle of sword and sorcery.” It’s Shogun Assassin

What began as an extensive manga series in the 70s called The Lone Wolf And Cub, shifted shapes into two different Japanese films, before being recut in 1980 and released to the grindhouse film circuit, chock full of brutal action and decapitations.

Our interest, of course, lies with the film’s ominous soundtrack, which blends eastern melodies with futuristic synths, electronic beats, and bouncing disco bass lines. Neither Japanese, nor authentic, this soundtrack is pretty damn badass.

Heads up Los Angelenos, there will be a Cinefamily Heavy Midnite showing of Shogun Assassin on Record Store Day (April 18th). Join us, if you dare.

Check out the album’s opening track in the video below:

Willie_VinylWillie Nelson’s Teatro

Willie Nelson has over 300 albums, and Teatro might be the most misunderstood of them all. It also might be our favorite. Willie and collaborator Daniel Lanois (who produces, plays guitar and bass, and contributes track ‘The Maker’) set up camp in an abandoned movie theater in Oxnard, CA and recorded live among the red velvet seats with the help of Emmylou Harris and a nine piece backing band that included Willie’s sister, Bobbie Nelson on piano. Maybe it was intentional, maybe it was the faint smell of popcorn haunting the cinema, but somehow this album actually took on a rather cinematic feel. Howling harmonicas and distant mariachi bands evoke spaghetti western scores of the past. Yet this grandness is made to feel intimate and immediate by Willie and Emmylou’s vocals.

Here’s a track from the album:

Legend has it that each year on Record Store Day, the Light In The Attic zine magically appears, as if by alchemy, in fine retailers across the globe. These small, ancient, newsprint catalogs of days gone by unveil highlights from the past year’s releases, teasers of things to come, and other pertinent musical musings.

This year, the zine gets a makeover; we spiced things up a bit to add just a touch more flare. In this issue, you’ll find new features like the first ever LITA-centric crossword puzzle, horoscopes, a fan art contest winner revealed, and new editorial features, both by and about the very employees at LITA who grease the cogs. There are exclusive interviews with Françoise Hardy, Willie Nelson, and Sly Stone; a feature on Native North America band Sugluk (who are feat. on cover clad in denim- if that’s not a tough look for 2015, we don’t know what is!), and secrets revealed about LITA co-owner Josh Wright! Pick one up fo’ free at your local wax purveyor!

Zine Fan Art Submissions!

Friday, November 7th, 2014

Want to have your art featured in our zine? Well here is your chance! We are now accepting fan art submissions for our annual Record Store Day zine. We print tens of thousands of these zines each year and distribute them to record stores around the world, so this is a great way to give your fan art some exposure.

We’re looking for subject matter related to all things Light In The Attic. Examples include: LITA artists portraits, alternative album art, drawings of interpretations of songs, etc… get creative! The zines are printed in black and white so please keep that in mind when submitting colorful art work. The dimensions are 7” x 7”. Only one submission will be featured. The deadline for submitting is next Friday. A winner will be notified via email.

Record Store Day Black Friday 2014!

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

Fall is finally upon us. Leaves have turned from green to gold, the air is thin and crisp, and you can almost smell the Thanksgiving turkey in the oven. However, the best part of the season is not gathering with family and friends for a seasonal feast, but rather the limited edition vinyl available on Black Friday, November 28th! This year we have a beautiful cornucopia of official Record Store Day Black Friday titles. Don’t waste your money on pumpkin spice lattes… head over to your local record store and buy vinyl!

V/A – There’s A Dream I’ve Been Saving

First up is the vinyl edition of There’s A Dream I’ve Been Saving. Seven years in the making, this is the ultimate artifact for Lee Hazlewood heads new and old. Now, for the first time, you can enjoy the entire experience on vinyl. This landmark box set contains an expansive LP-sized hard cover book detailing the label history of Lee Hazlewood Industries, accompanied by 8LPs + 4CDs and the never-before-released film Cowboy in Sweden.

Lizzy Mercier Descloux – Fire b/w Morning High (duet w/ Patti Smith)

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of impassioned poet, painter, actor, and prolific, self-taught musician Lizzy Mercier Descloux‘s death. Instrumental in the late 70s New York underground, yet of Parisian origin, Mercier Descloux, with partner Michel Esteban, established the magazine Rock News and ran in the same circles as Patti Smith and Richard Hell. Lizzy became a genre defying artist, pioneer of worldbeat and avant garde rock, and supreme minimalist of the no wave genre in her own right. Next year, we will release a detailed series showcasing her work. A glimpse of what’s in store for this upcoming archival series, this 7″ presents two key tracks from the Mercier Descloux catalog: the epitomic, 1979 disco-punk classic “Fire” backed with a rare session featuring Lizzy and “Godmother of Punk” Patti Smith reciting a bilingual version of Arthur Rimbaud’s poem, “Matinée d’ivresse/Morning High,” set to music by experimental contemporary Bill Laswell. Remastered from the original tapes, this 33 1/3 RPM 7” single comes pressed on “blue” colored wax.

Wayne McGhie – S/T

Finally back in print and one of the pinnacle releases in our catalog, this 1970 masterpiece is the Holy Grail of Toronto Funk! The first true debut of Studio One veteran and Jackie Mittoo bandmate Wayne McGhie, this self-titled LP is a wicked mix of Caribbean Funk, Soul and Reggae. For this special Black Friday edition we have expanded the album to a deluxe gatefold “tip-on” jacket with rare archival photos and extensive liner notes featuring interviews with McGhie, Alton Ellis, and Lloyd Delpratt. Limited to 1,000 hand numbered copies on gold wax!

Record Store Day 2014!

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

Tis’ almost that time of the year again for Record Store Day, the one day out of the year in which we pay homage to the local merchants of music – the unsung heroes of the music business – the guys and gals of independent record stores. For those who worship at the altar of vinyl, Record Store Day is like Christmas and Thanksgiving all rolled into one because record labels worldwide release super-limited titles, picture discs, rarities and one-offs. It’s a day that we here at Light In The Attic hold dear to our hearts. To commemorate RSD 2014, taking place on Saturday, April 19th, we have three incredible releases to share with you.

Built to Spill – Ultimate Alternative Wavers
MCR 907 (2xLP)

Modern Classics Recordings is proud to present for the first time on vinyl Built to Spill’s debut album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers. Showcasing a nod to Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr, UAW was recorded at Audio Lab Studios in the band’s hometown of Boise, Idaho and soon after released on Seattle imprint C/Z Records in 1993. Featuring former Treepeople member Doug Martsch, Caustic Resin’s Brett Netson, and drummer Ralf Youtz the album is filled with total rippers like the 9 minute “Built Too Long Parts 1, 2 & 3”. Other songs like “Nowhere Nothin’ Fucku”p is more of a hazy daze that lyrically pays homage to Velvet Underground’s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin”. Though it may have been the band’s debut, UAW still remains a special time capsule from one of modern rock’s great bands that are still going strong after 21 years.

Stephen John Kalinich – A World Of Peace Must Come
LITA 039 (LP)

“A World Of Peace Must Come is his masterpiece. That was fantastic.” – Brian Wilson

“‘Be Still’ is the only song I’ve ever heard that made me want to be a better person.” – Brian Barr, The Seattle Weekly

“The only other artist as pure as him is Captain Beefheart.” – Bill Bentley

It was in the mid 60s that poet Stephen John Kalinich first met the Beach Boys. Kalinich was the first artist to sign to the Beach Boys new label Brother Records. His first songs to see release were “Little Bird” and “Be Still,” which he wrote with Dennis Wilson and were released on the Friends album. His relationship with Dennis would lead to a number of further collaborations and Kalinich / Wilson co-writes, including: 20/20 – “All I Want To Do,” Hawthorne, CA – “A Time to Live in Dreams”, Pacific Ocean Blue – “Rainbows,” and Bambu – “Love Remember Me.” A World of Peace Must Come was recorded at various LA studios and at Brian’s house in Bel-Air in 1969. The tapes were promptly lost, not to be heard again until our discovery of them in 2008. Following the CD-only reissue in that year, this is the first time this timeless snapshot of an era and an ethos will be available on vinyl for Record Store Day 2014.

Michael Chapman –  Playing Guitar The Easy Way
LITA 114 (LP)

Along with Bert Jansch, Roy Harper, and John Martyn –  Michael Chapman is one of the most influential and important British singer/songwriter/folk guitarists of his generation. Like his peers, Chapman blended traditional folk influences with rock and jazz overtones for a unique sound that remains fresh to this day. Following on the heels of LITA’s previous Chapman reissues comes an ultra-rarity, 1978’s Playing The Guitar The Easy Way – an instructional record (complete with a 20 page booklet of notation) making its CD debut and reissued on vinyl for the first time ever!  For guitar geeks, it’s one of the first instructional methods to deal with open tunings like DADGAD. For Chapman fans, it’s merely a gas to listen to!

*The LITA record shop will be open on RSD, April 19th, offering all our exclusive RSD releases, plus a good 70+ other RSD exclusive releases we hand picked, such titles include: Nirvana Pennyroyal Tea / I Hate Myself And Want To Die 7”, The Velvet Underground – Loaded, and Notorious B.I.G. – Life After Death + many more! View the full list of RSD exclusives HERE.

There will also be a 25% off sale on any non RSD products, along with some sweet giveaways throughout the day. The shop is located at 913 NW 50th St., Ballard and open on RSD from 9 am-5 pm.

In celebration of Record Store Day, our friend and filmmaker Michael Reich made a short video showcasing our RSD 2014 releases. Check it out below…
