For this week’s Free Basin’ Fridays, we’re celebrating Serge Gainsbourg and his master opus Histoire De Melody Nelson (LITA 040). So, we’re giving away, to one lucky winner, a limited edition “Melody Nelson” t-shirt (American Apparel, sizes S, M, L, XL, available) and a copy of the CD or LP. The tee features a drawing of the album cover by Drew Christie and was originally only available at the Serge Gainsbourg tribute show at the Hollywood Bowl last August. The shirts sold out by the night’s end but now we’ve repressed another limited run, which will be available next Tuesday at LITA-LTD. Of course, how can you go wrong with the CD or LP reissue either?

For your chance to win, enter your name and email address (kept private) along with a comment below. Tell us your favorite Serge song, album, lyric, or moment even. Winner will be picked at random and announced next Friday, 3/30 at 12pm PST. Bon chance!

Histoire de Melody Nelson is my favorite album of all time. I couldn’t pick just one song. It is a perfect work of art.

  2. Drew Watson says:

En Melody is certianly my favorite Serge cut…i start dancing like a deranged skunk rat right when the needle hits the vinyl…i just can’t hold it in…perfection.

  3. ScottyJ says:

The fact that “Je T’aime …” peaked on the U.S. charts at … wait for it … #69.

  4. Janos says:

I’m not competing for these prizes, since I already have all of Serge’s LITA releases (Jane’s Di Doo Dah, too).
I just want to bring one of his lesser known LP-s into your attention. It is called Vu de l’extérieur, it is very similar in tone to Melody Nelson, only without Jane’s giggles and heavy breathing or Jean-Claude Vannier’s gorgeous arrangements. I know it doesn’t sound promising, but give it a try. You won’t regrdet it. It is also ripe for the LITA reissue treatment in my opinion.
Again, I’m not competing. If you pick me, please do another draw.

“ugliness is in a way superior to beauty because it lasts.” – serge gainsbourg

I really admire some of the last pieces he wrote before his death such as, “amours des feintes”, “dépression au-dessus du jardin”, “les dessous chics” as well as his entire collection of work.

Serge was one of the greatest misunderstood artists to come out of France. He’s become immortal.

    Merci Monsieur Gainsbourg.
