Remember Then? Broadcast Live (2000)!

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

With the recent passing of Broadcast front woman Trish Keenan, we’ve all been spinning their records a lot in remembrance. Seems like our friends over at Dublab have been on the same kick, as they just posted on their site a live recording of Broadcast from November 2000 while they were on tour in support of the The Noise Made By People album. The show is from the El Ray theatre in Los Angeles, CA where Broadcast were opening for Godspeed You! Black Emperor and by all accounts, the killed it. And hey, now you can give your own account, as Dublab have graciously archived the entire performance on their site.

Thanks to Dublab for sharing and to DJ Nobody for his moving account of the show.

Amoeba DJ set wrap up!

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Thanks to all the friends and fans that came out on Saturday for our DJ set at Amoeba Music (Hollywood). We rocked it hard and had beaucoup fun to boot. Special thanks goes out to our bros and brodettes at Ameoba–Kara Lane, Daniel Tures, Joel Isaac Black, Mahssa TaghiniaMorgan Young, and all the rest of the awesome staff!

Also a big shout out to our give-away winners! The first dude that got the Michael Chapman Fully Qualified Survivor LP ran away before we could snap a pic (he litterally ran up, grabbed the record, then ran away! dude was stoked!). The next lucky fan was chill enough to score a Michael Hurley Have Moicy! LP and give us a big smile for the camera:

@Not_YouAgain snagged "Have Moicy!"

Here are some more sweet pics from the Amoeba staff. Check out their site for more shots. Tanx for the memories!

A Day in Los Angeles with Michael Chapman

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Just last week the road warrior Michael Chapman wrapped up his North America tour. The good word from the man himself is he’s already hitting the road in Europe…an inspiration indeed. We had the supreme pleasure of putting Michael up while he was in Los Angeles for his first show on the Bill Callahan leg of the tour. What a time we had. We showed him around town, including stops at Amoeba in Hollywood, Reuben Cox’s Old Style Guitar Shop in Silverlake, and a great meet up with Fully Qualified Survivor arranger Paul Buckmaster. Here’s a few photos (and a video) of the day. See ya out there next time…

So many records...they go all the way up

We’re excited to announce that we’re co-presenting several sneak preview screenings across the USA of the great new film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (directed by Joann Sfar). Taking the best from La Vie en Rose and Amélie, renowned comic book artist Joann Sfar’s Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life is a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Jewish singer-songwriter, Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino). Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Sfar follows him from his precocious childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, to his beginnings as small time jazz musician and finally pop superstar. Along the way he romances many of the era’s most beautiful women, including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon). Employing a witty surrealistic style and a soundtrack that includes many of the musician’s greatest hits, Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life is a quintessential time capsule to ‘60’s Paris.

We’re GIVING AWAY one pair of tickets to screening in New York City at the New Museum (this is sold out, so these are the only tix left!) and Los Angeles at the Bootleg Theater for this Wednesday, August 24th. For your chance to win, leave your name and email address (which is kept hidden) and tell us your favorite Serge Gainsbourg song. Winners will be announced Wednesday at 9AM (PST) and 12PM (EST). More screenings and giveways to follow, so check back soon. Good luck!

Pat Thomas Travels Over Land and Sea With “Listen Whitey!: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power”

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Fantagraphics Books and Light In The Attic Records are excited to announce that author, lecturer, and music-man Pat Thomas is hitting the road with Listen Whitey!: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power. Meet the mofo behind the book that pays tribute to the Black Power Movement of the ’60s-’70s. Heading up the West Coast and then across the pond to England, Thomas will be giving talks, signing books, and playing tracks at both bookstores and record shops.

While researching this book project in Oakland, Thomas discovered rare recordings of speeches, interviews, and music by noted activists Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Elaine Brown, and others that form the framework of this definitive retrospective. Listen, Whitey! chronicles the forgotten history of Motown Records’ Black Power subsidiary label, Black Forum, which released politically charged albums by Stokely Carmichael, Langston Hughes, Bill Cosby, and Ossie Davis, among others. Obscure records produced by African-American sociopolitical organizations of the period are examined, along with the Isley Brothers, Nina Simone, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Watts Prophets, Roland Kirk, Horace Silver, Angela Davis, H. Rap Brown, Stanley Crouch, and many more. Thomas will give a slide and music presentation, and then sign copies of Listen, Whitey! Book/CDs/LPs. The album features rare tracks from African-American activists like Dick Gregory, Eldridge Cleaver, and the Last Poets, with protest music by Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Gil Scott-Heron, Roy Harper, and more.

Spread the word and hope to see you out there!
